Lovecraft Country Season 1 Episode 2 Recap:
Here’s what happened in the previous episode. American soldier Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) fights in the brutal Korean Wars. A red-skinned woman (Jamie Chung) descends from a flying saucer and robots and squid-like creatures populate the battlefield. She reaches down and pulls Atticus into an embrace. A creature descends to kill them but a bat cut it off into two. Out comes Jackie Robinson clad in a Dodgers uniform covered in green goo with fireworks erupting behind him.

Our story is set in the 1950’s with our hero travelling in a segregated bus. The bus unfortunately breaks down and instead of waiting back with the white passengers, Atticus and another Black passenger opt to walk. The pair walk while Atticus tells his new companion that he is going home to Chicago because his father, Montrose sent him a rather odd letter. He even adds that he is currently reading A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Atticus is thrilled to be able to share his passion but is met with skepticism as he tries to defend former Confederate soldier John Carter.
In Chicago, George Freeman and his wife Hippolyta discuss he travelling guide they are assembling for the Black Americans. Atticus arrives then. George and Atticus meet in George’s makeshift travel guide office. Montrose enters to let them know that he has found answers regarding his late wife’s ancestry. Montrose had gone looking for answers to the Lovecraft Country which is Arkham as he says but George corrects him saying it is Ardham. At night, a block party begins for the South Side residents and Leticia Leti Lewis is introduced as well as her older sister Ruby.

Atticus returns home to find clues in the Alexandre Dumas novels which Montrose loves but he finds his gun instead. He keeps the gun with him. The next morning Atticus finds Leti trying to hitch a ride with them. They are childhood friends and despite losing touch still care for one another. They get on the road. At a pit stop to have ice cream they see a black father and his children trying to get the white waitress to serve them. They stop for a bathroom break and have to exit through the colored entrance. They drive off.

Their next pit stop is a small town called Simmonsville. George suggests that the sign out is different but they were welcome in. when they sit inside they realize that the ownership of the joint isn’t Black as George was certain off. The walls of the place are whitewashed and Atticus asks him, “Remind me why the White House is white?” It then dawns upon them that the ownership of the joint was not peacefully changed but the previous Black owners were either killed or run out of town while their business was burnt to ground. Suddenly a silver car pulls up and they realize they have to run for their lives. A heated car chase between them and the white people of Simmonsville ends with a mysterious young woman who creates a barrier for them to escape.

The trio finally reach Leti’s brother Marvin’s home. Marvi has access to the records of Ardham as well as the neighboring town Bideford. Bideford’s local sheriff Eustace Hunt is actually a racist. There is a lot of internal conflict that night and we come to know that there is a lot more to the story of Montrose and Atticus than is led on.

Lastly, George, Leti, and Atticus go to Ardham. They get lost in the woods between Ardham and Bideford. Hunt appears. There is a lot of tension between the two parties. As they try to escape they are very close to being caught by Hunt and his men. but before there is any violence, a mysterious creature leaps out and attacks the deputy by cutting off his arm. Atticus, George, and Leti take shelter in an abandoned cabin with Hunt and one of the deputies. The monster bite transforms Hunt to a monster. George, Leti, and Atticus manage to make it out of the woods. They find themselves at a mansion and are welcomed in by a young man which leaves them confused.
